Guidelines for Participants
on Mt. St. Helens Club Outings


To ensure safety and an enjoyable time for all, participants in Club activities should:


Before the activity:


Understand that no pets, smoking, or alcoholic beverages are allowed on club activities.

Review the rating system to assess your ability to handle the degree of difficulty involved.

Understand that the leader has the authority to refuse to take any participant he or she deems not properly clothed, equipped or physically capable of handling the demands of the activity.

Contact the leader before the activity to confirm details and any changes.

Inquire about the anticipated length of the activity.

It is advisable not to have any critical commitments scheduled immediately after an activity in the event that the group’s return is delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.

Share with the leader any medical/health conditions which may manifest during a club activity to the extent that intervention by club members or medical personnel may be necessary.

Read and sign the Waiver and Release of Liability prior to the activity.

A copy will be available at the activity for all to sign. All participants are required to sign. For minors to participate, each must have a waiver for minors signed by their parent/legal guardian. Notify the leader in advance of the activity if a minor or developmentally disabled person will accompany you on an activity.

Notify a friend and/or relative of the activity destination, approximate return time, and a contact number of the activity leader.

Come prepared with day hike essentials, including food, water, proper clothing and footwear.

Bring cash for meal and carpool contribution.

Maximum of 10 cents per mile per passenger.

Arrive a little early at the meeting location.

Carpools depart at the listed start times or shortly thereafter.

During the activity:


Listen to the activity leader and follow his or her instructions.

Obey club and trail rules.

Stay in groups with a minimum of three people.

Except with permission of activity leader in areas with heavy traffic.

Try to leave the trail better than it was found.

Understand participants are expected to remain with the group until completion of the activity.

Upon returning to the meeting location, contribute to your driver for fuel, or collect from your passengers.

A maximum of 10 cents per mile may be assessed to cover actual cost, at driver’s discretion.
